Sermon Topic: To Stand
Scriptures: Isaiah 40:8; Psalm 119:105; Romans 11:20 – 21; Revelation 3:20
Introduction: In order to understand what it means “To Stand” we must first understand how the Bible views this. In the Strong’s complete dictionary of Bible words it is defined as: to be firm, faithful, true and to trust. How we view the words “To Stand” will have a direct impact on us and just where God wants to bring us in our journey of faith. A lifetime journey built upon: Standing on God’s Word and Standing by faith.
1.Standing on God’s Word:
Isaiah 40 verse eight - The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.” My brothers in this life material possessions and even life, are here today and their gone tomorrow. What we have to face in this life is only temporary but God wants us to know that His Word will forever stand. Psalm 119:105 tells us: Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. The word of God directs us in our work and way, and a dark place indeed the world would be without it. The commandment is a lamp that keeps burning with the oil of the Spirit, as a light to direct us in the choice of our way, and the steps we take in that way. We cannot offer anything to God, that he will accept but what he is pleased to teach us to do. To have our soul or life constantly in our own hands, can get us into trouble and even danger. But God wants us to know that we can stand on His Word and as long as we focus on His Word and on His many promises He will guide us and see us through all of life’s challenges. As the end draws nearer to the return of the Lord we can rest confidently upon God’s Word. There may be difficulties to such as we are, and the Word may seem a weak thing to confide in for eternity, but in truth there is nothing more stable, more rock solid than the Word of God.
2. Standing By Faith:
Romans 11:20-21 tells us-That is true. But they were broken (pruned) off because of their unbelief (their lack of real faith), and you are established through faith [because you do believe]. So do not become proud and conceited, but rather stand in awe and be reverently afraid. For if God did not spare the natural branches [because of unbelief], neither will He spare you [if you are guilty of the same offense]. (Amplified Version)
Race, ethnic background, social background, intellect or extreme morals don’t save you or make you right with God. Only by salvation by faith alone. All of God’s attributes work in harmony; there is no conflict between His goodness and love, His justice and wrath. Those who accept His gracious gift of salvation experience His goodness. On the other hand those who reject it experience His harshness. Those who reject God’s offer of salvation will bring upon themselves their spiritual ruin and eternal separation from God. God will deal severely with those who reject Him. But God desires so much more for mankind. Revelation 3:20 tells us - Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me. How do we hear God’s voice? Through the Holy Spirit which was sent to convict the world of sin. The Bible also tells us that faith comes by hearing, hearing the Word of God. When we take the time to share our testimony with someone or tell them what Jesus has done in our lives we’re planting seeds and guiding them to the only answer to all of life’s questions Jesus. He promises to stand at the door of your heart and if you hear His voice and open that very door of your heart, He will come in and dine with you and you with Him.
In Closing,
It’s God’s desire that we stand by His everlasting Word and that we stand by faith. We can trust in God’s Word for it’s the truth that can set you free. It is the infallible, incorruptible Word of God. A word with a message that can change a person’s life. We all should desire nothing less than to stand by faith and proclaim Jesus all the days of our lives even to our last dying breath. As long as we stand on God’s Word and by faith the Lord promises that we will never be disappointed.
